Balancing Technology and Tradition

As AI technologies advance, they offer promising avenues for preserving and disseminating IK. However, the application of AI in this context raises significant ethical issues that need to be addressed. These include respecting Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS), ensuring the inclusion of Indigenous peoples in AI development, upholding data sovereignty, maintaining cultural sensitivity, acknowledging intellectual property rights, and ensuring fair benefit sharing. The paper provides a comprehensive examination of these ethical considerations, drawing on primary and review papers, and secondary information from the web. The findings highlight the importance of navigating these ethical considerations to ensure the respectful and appropriate use of AI for IK preservation. The paper concludes with recommendations for incorporating these ethical considerations into the design and implementation of AI systems for IK preservation. This research contributes to the growing discourse on AI ethics, particularly in the context of IK preservation.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a ubiquitous part of our modern world, transforming everything from healthcare to transportation. It is a technology that learns and adapts, capable of performing tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as understanding natural language, recognizing patterns, solving problems, and making decisions (Russell & Norvig, 2016). As AI continues to evolve and permeate various aspects of our lives, it brings with it a host of opportunities and challenges. One of the most significant opportunities presented by AI is its potential to preserve and disseminate Indigenous Knowledge (IK). IK, which encompasses the wisdom, knowledge, and teachings of indigenous people, is a rich resource that has been passed down through generations. It offers valuable insights into sustainable living and biodiversity, among other things (Berkes, 2018). However, IK is at risk of being lost due to factors such as globalization, cultural assimilation, and the passing of elders. AI, with its capabilities for data collection, analysis, and dissemination, could play a crucial role in preserving this invaluable knowledge for future generations.

However, the integration of AI into the realm of IK is not without its challenges. There is a delicate balance that must be struck between leveraging the benefits of AI and respecting and preserving the cultural integrity of indigenous communities. The use of AI in this context raises several ethical considerations. For instance, how do we ensure that AI systems respect the cultural protocols of indigenous communities? How do we ensure that indigenous communities have control over their data and how it is used? How do we prevent the misuse or exploitation of IK?

Moreover, there is a broader question of how we can harmonize the seemingly disparate worlds of AI and IK. On the one hand, we have AI, a product of modern science and technology, characterized by algorithms, data, and machine learning (Russell & Norvig, 2016). On the other hand, we have IK, which is deeply rooted in tradition, culture, and a profound connection with the natural world (Berkes, 2018). How do we bring these two worlds together in a way that is respectful and beneficial to indigenous communities?

One approach is to involve indigenous communities in the development and implementation of AI systems. This not only ensures that the AI system accurately represents their knowledge but also empowers these communities by building their capacity to engage with and benefit from the technology. It also fosters a sense of ownership and control, which is crucial for the ethical use of IK. Another approach is to design AI systems with cultural sensitivity. This means that the systems should not stereotype or misrepresent indigenous cultures. Instead, they should reflect the richness and diversity of these cultures, and the deep respect for the natural world that is inherent in IK (ICT Inc, n.d.).

As we navigate the intersection of AI and IK, it is crucial that we do so with a deep sense of respect and understanding. We must strive to leverage the benefits of AI while honouring and preserving the cultural integrity of indigenous communities. This requires a delicate balance, but with careful thought and consideration, it is a balance that can be achieved.

Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) are deeply rooted in the cultural contexts from which they emerge. They encompass a wide range of knowledge, from traditional ecological knowledge to cultural practices and beliefs. AI systems used to preserve and disseminate IK should be designed in a way that respects and acknowledges these unique cultural contexts. This includes […]
